Choosing the Right Path to a Straighter Smile: Invisalign vs. Traditional Braces.
When achieving that perfectly aligned smile, patients don’t always know their options. In fact, Hollywood has a habit of showing dental corrective devices in a terrible light through shows like “Ugly Betty” or the headgear-wearing terror Darla in “Finding Nemo.” Both can put patients off the idea of orthodontics. However, the reality is much more palatable, especially with clear aligner treatments. While traditional braces and clear aligners like Invisalign can often get you your perfect smile, here are five things to consider to make sure you’re choosing the right option for you:
- Aesthetics: Invisalign clear aligners are virtually invisible when worn, allowing you to improve your smile discreetly. While cases with traditional braces aren’t usually as severe as Darla’s, the option does necessitate brackets and wires that are often visible. Some specialists may be able to place this device on the back side of the teeth to hide them from sight, but it creates a much more complicated treatment.
- Comfort: Invisalign is formed especially for your teeth using 3D imaging technology. There are few — if any — opportunities for the aligners to irritate the cheeks or gums. Traditional braces, unfortunately, are notoriously uncomfortable, especially when starting off. Patients are often given wax to cover the sharp, metal projections.
- Convenience: Brushing and flossing can become a nuisance with braces, and both sticky and hard foods must typically be avoided. Invisalign aligners are easily removed, allowing you to eat, brush, and floss as normal. However, if not stored properly while you’re at home or out to eat, the aligners can easily become lost, and the physician must order replacements, so be careful!
- Treatment Time: While each case varies, milder corrective cases tend to see similar results regardless of treatment options. More complex cases, however, typically require the nuance that traditional braces are capable of.
- Office Visits: Traditional braces typically require adjustments every four to six weeks. However, depending on your state’s laws and physician’s recommendations, you can usually receive many Invisalign sets at once, allowing you to replace the ones you’re wearing without an additional appointment.
While traditional braces may be necessary for some, Invisalign has offered many a comfortable, convenient, and aesthetically pleasing option for a beautiful smile. Its ability to fit into your lifestyle without worrying about appointments or what you can eat makes it an attractive choice for teens and adults alike.
